Atlanta Symphony Family Series

The Atlanta Symphony has 3 concerts in their Family Series this year.  They are:

"Halloween on Hogwarts"

Wholly Harry, wholly entertaining! Led by a wise old wizard with a bedazzling assortment of tricks up his sleeve, the Orchestra performs selections from the Harry Potter films. Dress as your favorite witch, sorcerer or other fantasy character and delight in the annual musician costume contest and a slew of surprises.

"Charlotte and the Music Maker"

Gleeful entertainment for everyone! Ignored at home despite her musical talent, Charlotte runs away and runs smack into trouble until the Music-Maker, a genial but mysterious gent, sweeps her away on a trip of wondrous discovery. Charlotte enters the thrilling world of the orchestra and the exciting sound and colors of its instruments, accompanied by a stunning original score.

"Mother Goose"

Discover the fascinating world of Mother Goose as she spins enchanting stories of her childhood. Inspired by Ravel’s rich musical imagery, and featuring the creative team that gave us this season’s magical Cinderella, Mother Goose’s tales act out the triumphs of being human for both children and adults.

Sleeping Beauty (puppet)

I did not know this, but The Center for Puppetry Arts is also putting on a performance of Tchaikovsky's "Sleeping Beauty" (normally a ballet.) Here's the info from the website:

"Join hero Prince Stefan as he sets out to rescue the princess Aurora, and her family’s kingdom, asleep for almost one hundred years. Told from the prince's point of view, this adaptation of the much-loved fairy tale combines beautifully crafted marionettes with the timeless music from Tchaikovsky's ballet."

Showtimes and additional info can be found here.

Listen for the waltz Tchaikovsky wrote for the ballet, which was adapted by Disney as "Once Upon a Dream" and used in their movie version of the story.

Events around town!

Every once in a while, I'll post events that are happening in the area. Hopefully you will enjoy them!

The Center for Puppetry Arts is performing a show of one of the most famous classical pieces written for children. "Peter and the Wolf" (music written by Sergei Prokofiev) is a story which is used to introduce kids to different instruments in the orchestra.

I do need to warn you that there are many versions of this story and some versions may be upsetting for kids as the Duck is eaten by the Wolf. Sometimes they revive him at the end and in some they do not. You may want to call the venue to see which story they are planning to use and use your disecretion as to if it is something you want to expose your children to.

If you do attend, I want to challenge the parents to see if you can recognize which movie used the Wolf's theme. (Hint: it plays for 24 hours every year!)

You can find more information here. (The link directs you to the Center for Puppetry Arts' website.)

Also, the Johns Creek Orchestra is doing a "Meet the Orchestra" program. Here's the description taken from their website:

"Calling all elementary and middle school students! Want to learn about the Orchestra? Want to hear some cool instruments and great music? Want to meet some awesome musicians? Come to "Meet the Orchestra!" and have a fun time with Stan-the-Music Man as you learn about the families of instruments."

You can find more information at their website

Recorders

Forms for recorders have been passed out to 4th and 5th graders at both schools. If you need to purchase one, please do not purchase a recorder from Target, Walmart, or any sort of dollar store! These instruments will be less money, but the quality is not good! It will make it harder for your student to be successful. Please purchase an instrument (Soprano Baroque recorder) from a music store such as (but not limited to):
