Recorders

Forms for recorders will be passed out soon. If you need to purchase one from a vendor other than us, please do not purchase a recorder from Target, Walmart, or any sort of dollar store! These instruments will probably be less money, but the quality is not good! It will make it harder for your student to be successful. Please purchase an instrument (Soprano Baroque recorder) from a music store such as (but not limited to):

Music opportunities around metro Atlanta

We live in a city that is overfilling with chances for our students to experience music and so throughout the year, I will be posting music opportunities around metro Atlanta.

Here are a couple that are happening soon:

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra has 3 family concerts this year. They are:

  • Phantom of the OperaEvery Halloween the “phantoms of the orchestra” return to haunt the concert hall. The maestro and his terrified assistant must use the power of the baton to control this ghoulish orchestra of the undead and lead them in concert. Sunday, October 27, 2013 1:30 pm & 3:30 pm
  • Tchaikovsky Discovers America:  Based on actual historic events, this story tells of the great composer’s arrival in New York for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891, and his adventure-filled trip to Niagara Falls. Audiences will enjoy more than twenty-five excerpts of the composer’s music — woven into the drama, as two performers recreate historical incidents from the composer’s life, and act out stories from his famous ballets. Sunday, February 9, 2014 1:30 pm & 3:30 pm
  • Sounds of the Symphony!: Join the Atlanta Symphony for a lively and musical ride where you and your family will discover the wonders of an orchestra! Meet the Brass, Woodwinds, Percussion and Strings, who will each share their unique sound and music. Hear selections from some of the best-loved orchestral compositions. Meet the Orchestra and become a life-long friend with music. Sunday, March 30, 2014 1:30 pm & 3:30 pm
Here are a couple of groups that you may want to check out, but have not updated their calendars yet:
  • Greater Atlanta Girls ChoirThe Greater Atlanta Girls Choir (GAGC) is based in Roswell, Georgia and serves girls grades 3 – 12. GAGC strives to build girls’ confidence, self-esteem, and lifelong love of music through exposure to challenging, multi-cultural choral music; positive role models; and production of high quality performances for local, national, and international communities.
  • The Atlanta Young SingersSince 1975, Atlanta Young Singershas been at the forefront of the choral art form in metro Atlanta and the U.S., thrilling audiences all over the world with innovative programming, professional performance, and exciting commissions. We nurture the incredible artistic abilities of children, offering esteem, confidence, teamwork and leadership.
  • SODA (String Orchestra of Decatur and Atlanta,) is a youth orchestra for 3rd-9th graders.
  • Cobb Wind Symphony Formed in September 1999, the Cobb Wind Symphony is comprised of adult musicians from all over the Atlanta area. CWS was created to provide a musical outlet for musicians of Cobb County and the Atlanta area and to further the development of band music.
I will also post Johns Creek High School, Roswell High School, Autrey Mill Middle School, and Crabapple Middle School, Fulton Youth Orchestra, and Fulton Honors Chorus concerts when I receive them.

Talent Shows

For the last 2 weeks of school, we will have a talent show during Music class. This talent show is for their classmates only. Students may do any talent of their choosing as long as it's appropriate for school. If their talent cannot be done in my classroom (such as football, archery, karate, gymnastics, street art, etc.) students may be bring in a thumb drive or DVD with a recording of them doing their talents. You may also upload it onto YouTube and send it to me at yenmusicclass@gmail.com or yen@fultonschools.org.

Students may bring their own instruments in to class, however must have a way to bring it to and from school. The only items in my classroom students are allowed to use are the piano, the CD player, and the TV.

If students are dancing to or singing a song with lyrics, they must fill out this form so that I can approve the lyrics.

I'm excited to see what you all can do!
